SIRINAT NATIONAL PARK

Sirinat National Park is best known for its well-preserved white sand beaches, encompasses 22 sq km of coastal land, plus 68 sq km of sea, stretching from just beyond the northern end of Ao Bang Thao to the northernmost tip of the island. Also, Mai Khao beach and Naiyang beach are both sea turtle nesting areas.

Between November and February sea turtles come to lay eggs on these beaches. Before 1992, it was formerly known as Naiyang National Park. The name change was a result of the expansion of Naiyang National Park, established in 1981, to also cover Mai Khao Beach to celebrate the 60th birthday of Queen Sirikit.

NAIYANG MARKET

A colourful community market nearby operates three days a week. Shopping at this type of market can be a lot of fun and an eye opening experience for out-of-town visitors. There are lots of products on display, from fresh food, tropical vegetables and fruits as well as CD’s, DVD’s, clothes, handicrafts and more.

WAT NAIYANG (WAT MONGKOL WARARAM)

Naiyang Temple is another local wat worth a visit as on its grounds, among many other interesting structures, stands a beautiful wooden abbot’s house built in 1954. There is a daily aerobic session at the temple in dry season run by the residents of Tambon Sakoo and open for everyone free of charge. The session usually starts from 17:00 and lasts about an hour. Bring along your own drinking water as there is no shop inside the temple.

NAIYANG BEACH

This beach is very popular beach among locals and tourists alike. The beach is on a long curving bay lined with casuarina trees that provide shade to picnickers. First class accommodations are available. To get there take the Naiyang Road and look for signs indicating the park entrance. The place is very laidback, recalling the early days of Phuket, before it became the jetsetters favourite that it is now.

MAI KHAO BEACH

Mai Khao Beach, on the northwest coast of Phuket, stretches a bit over 10km but is still much less developed than other beaches on the island. Mai Khao is a very popular camping spot. It is part of the Sirinat National Park and the only significant construction along it is the Phuket International Airport as well as a few high-end resorts.
